Armed bandits rob teacher of motorcycle

A 43-year-old teacher of Wismar, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) is now counting his losses after he was robbed of his motorcycle by armed bandits on Tuesday.
Reports are that about 23:00h on Tank Street, Wisroc Housing Scheme, Wismar, Linden Fidel Alleyne, a teacher of Christianburg Secondary, Wismar, was robbed of his motorcycle bearing licence plate CH 6977.
According to the Police, the teacher had just left home when two armed bandits pounced on him. He told Police that one of the suspects, who was clad in a dark coloured pair of short pants, light coloured T-shirt and a mask, jumped out of a clump of bushes, and pointed a gun at him.
Alleyne was subsequently kicked off his motorcycle and beaten by one of the bandits, who threatened to kill him if he did not hand over his valuables. Shortly after, the other suspect then emerged from the bushes and both men made good their escape on the motorcycle.
Alleyne said the motorcycle was valued at $425,000. No one has been arrested as investigations are ongoing.
On Saturday, the Region 10 Police Division said that it has recorded so far for 2020, a 66.6 per cent increase in armed robberies where firearms were used. This was according to Regional Commander Wayne DeHearte.
Commander DeHearte said they were able to successfully solve 13 of the 15 cases that were reported and bring them to the courts. He added that burglaries have decreased by 57.2 per cent, with seven reported cases so far this year as compared to 11 last year.
One shotgun and six pistols were recovered by Police in 2020 compared to none last year.
Commander DeHearte added that for the year 2020, ranks in Linden were able to seize a number of firearms, including shotguns and pistols.
“We would have seized a number of ammunitions…we’re working hard to ensure the guns are off of the streets,” DeHearte noted.
A total of 265 9mm ammunition was retrieved by the Division thus far for the year compared to none for the same period last year. Four .32 rounds of ammunition were recovered compared to one last year.
