A fire suspected to have been deliberately set destroyed three buildings and severely damaged another at Lot 10 North Sophia, Greater Georgetown, on Sunday, according to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS).
The GFS in Sunday evening said that it responded to reports of a house fire at Pike Street, Sophia, dispatching three water tenders and an ambulance to the scene.

When firefighters arrived, they found one building fully engulfed in flames, while nearby structures were under threat from the rapidly spreading fire. A motorcycle was also completely destroyed. The GFS said that firefighters immediately commenced firefighting, rescue and recovery operations. Three water tenders were used to contain and extinguish the blaze, preventing further damage to surrounding properties.
It reported that the fire resulted in the complete destruction of three buildings and severe damage to a fourth structure.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated from a motorcycle before spreading to nearby buildings. Investigators suspect the blaze was maliciously set.
The GFS said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
