Arson suspected in preschool fire

A building that housed a preschool at Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice (WCB), Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), was partially destroyed by fire in the wee hours of Sunday.

Quick response by ranks of the Onverwagt Fire Station resulted in the fire being put out before extensive damage to the two-storey building.
However, several pieces of furniture and sections of the building were destroyed
The building is owned by Dr Rhonda Archer of 14 Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald said initial investigations revealed that the fire was maliciously set.

He said forensic investigators were able to find a piece of wood to which flammable material was attached in the building next to furniture which was burnt.
