As El Niño dry season nears: Avoid burning rubbish, dispose of cigarettes safely, take precautions – Fire Service

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is urging members of the public to adopt fire safety measures as the country prepares for the approaching El Niño dry season, which is expected to bring hotter temperatures, drier conditions and an increased risk of fires. In a public advisory shared on its social media platforms on Sunday, the Fire Service warned that a single spark could quickly develop into a dangerous wildfire, posing a threat to homes, farms, businesses and lives. The agency encouraged citizens to follow basic fire prevention practices to reduce the risk of outbreaks during the dry season. Among the recommendations, the Fire Service advised the public never to leave fires unattended and to avoid burning rubbish or dry vegetation during periods of hot and windy weather. Smokers were also reminded to dispose of cigarettes safely to prevent accidental fires. Residents were further encouraged to keep their surroundings free of dry grass and other combustible materials, which can fuel the rapid spread of fires. The Fire Service also reminded the public to act immediately if a fire is detected by moving to a safe location and reporting the incident through the emergency hotline, 912.
The agency stressed that preventing fires requires collective responsibility, urging citizens to play their part in protecting lives and property throughout the El Niño season.
“Fire prevention starts with you. Together, we can protect our families, our communities and our nation,” the Fire Service said.
