Aurora Secondary School emerged as the overall winner of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha (GHDS) Essequibo Coast Praant’s Annual Inter-Secondary School Rangoli Competition, held on Wednesday at the Abram Zuil Secondary School, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), as part of activities leading up to the celebration of Diwali.
The annual competition saw participation from several secondary schools across the Essequibo Coast, with students displaying their artistic abilities, creativity, and understanding of Hindu culture through the traditional art of Rangoli.
Participants were required to interpret the competition’s theme through their designs, which were assessed based on theme depiction, description and interpretation, use of colour, creativity and space, aesthetics and skills, as well as originality. The competition carried a maximum score of 50 marks.
Delivering the opening remarks, GHDS Executive Member Mahindra Sharma commended the Dharmic Naujawan for organising the activity and providing young people with an opportunity to participate in cultural and educational programmes.
Sharma noted that the Sabha remains committed to engaging youths in activities that promote and preserve Guyana’s diverse cultural heritage.
He further highlighted the importance of initiatives such as the Rangoli competition in allowing students to express their creativity while developing a greater appreciation for Hindu traditions, particularly during the observance of Diwali, the festival of lights.
At the end of the competition, Aurora Secondary School secured first place, while Anna Regina Secondary School took second place. Host school Abram Zuil Secondary School finished third.
Cotton Field Secondary School placed fourth, followed by Johanna Cecilia Secondary School in fifth position and 8th May Secondary School in sixth. Charity Secondary School also participated in the event.
The entries were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising Tageanindra Kishore, Dayvishanie Naipaul and Premi Sharma Seurattan.
The annual event is part of the Essequibo Coast Praant’s Diwali celebrations and continues to provide a platform for students to showcase their talent while promoting cultural awareness, artistic expression and the preservation of traditional practices among younger generations.
