‘B’ Division Police clubs dominate ‘cavalcade of sports’

sports clubs from both Region five (Mahaica/Berbice) and Region six (East Berbice/Corentyne) and those attached to Police “B” Divison police, ‘cavalcade of sports’ on Sunday at the Albion Sports Complex. The event was organised by the Region Six Independence Jubilee Committee and the Department of Culture.

The Police Sports Club of Tain, Lesbeholden Strikers, Mibicuri Strikers, Police Sports Club of Whim, Johanna Sports Club, Shining Star, Fyrish Strikers, Hopetown Sports Club and Bloomfield joined forced to make an almost clean sweep of the several sporting disciplines which formed the cavalcade of sports.

groups were credited for their participation.

Shining Star and Hopetown were declared joint winners of the circle tennis competition. In semifinal action, Shining Star got pass Jets 82 – 45 and Hopetown brushed aside PMTC 74 – 66.

In Volleyball, PMTC fielded four teams and came out as winners in both the male and female categories. PMTC (1) were the overall winners with PMTC U-19 finishing as the runners-up. On the distaff side, PMTC females were the winners after beating Orealla 15-8, 15-9, 15-10.

In chess; Mibicuri Strikers out-played PMTC seven and a half to half point.

Hopetown Sports Club won all but one of the athletic events as Jamal Butts of PMTC won the men 100m the female 100m was won by Alicia Grant. Hopetown took full control and won all of the relay races.

The football competition was won by Fyrish Strikers.

In cricket, Albion were the winners after defeating Hard Knocks in the final. Earlier Albion defeated Number 38 in the first round then restricted Back Lash to 39 off five overs and replied with 42 before meeting with Shining Star in the semifinal. Batting first Shining Star made 13 and Alboin replied with 14-2.

On their journey to the final, Hard Knocks chased down 54 made by Courtland to move into the second round where they drew a bye. In their semifinal match, Hard Knocks chalked up 32 and then restricted Edingburg Sports Club to 29.

The cavalcade of sports also saw table tennis and darts being played.

Regional Sports Officer, in commending participant noted that it was the first time clubs from all 16 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) three towns, several Community Development Committees (CDCs) in Region Six along with groups from Region Five participated in a day of sports. “This is the first time that so many athletes, sportsmen and women have come together for one day in this region to have fun and celebrate an anniversary of this country, I must thank all of the volunteers and everyone who participated in today’s activity. The Department of Culture truly appreciates the spirit in which all of the games were played. We have had players from as far as Orealla to the East Bank of Berbice; without you today proceedings would not have been a success.”

Trophies were given out to the winners.
