Bacchus vows to take “no-nonsense” approach to crime-fighting in Reg 6
New Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) Police Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus says he will adopt a no-nonsense approach to fighting crime in the region.
The Senior Superintendent, who took up the post last week, told the media that ad-hoc arrangements would no longer be tolerated in the region, while adding that things would be done differently.
According to the Commander, what goes for the public goes for Police ranks in the region. Within one week of him taking up the position, a tint campaign has been initiated.
However, days before the campaign, Police Officers who own vehicles were warned.
“We would have done house cleaning first; meaning that I had instructed the Police within Region Six to take off all tints on their motor vehicles. Thirty-five per cent of tint is allowed by law, and [if you] have more than that we would ask you to strip by the certifying officer through the Magistrate’s Court.”
After the in-house cleaning was done, the focus was shifted to the public. During the campaign which was held on Tuesday evening at several locations, 44 drivers were found in breach, with 28 of them operating tinted vehicles without a tint permit.
According to Divisional Traffic Officer Niron Hassan, they found that some hire cars and also public mini-buses were heavily tinted.
“No hire car and no minibus are authorised to carry a tint on their vehicle, only private vehicles and if so the Home Affairs Minister will have to give you permission to do so,” he explained.
Further, the Divisional Traffic Officer noted that most accidents on the roadways involve persons who are driving under the influence of alcohol.
Apart from that, inattentiveness has also been responsible for many of the road accidents in the region. As such, he is urging motorists to pay more attention and to be more careful on the roadways.
