‘Bandit’ apprehended after allegedly relieving contractor of firearm

A 29-year-old contractor and gold miner of Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was on Wednesday evening attacked and robbed by three men while at the Classic Chinese Restaurant at Success Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
One of the men who carried out the robbery was armed with a handgun.
Preliminary investigations revealed that on the day in question, at about 20:30h, the victim was in the company of his father and some friends when the three suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, rushed into the restaurant where the victim and company were imbibing.
The bandit who was armed with a gun held the victim at gunpoint and demanded that he hand over his valuables and cash. A scuffle for the victim’s firearm ensued, during which one of the suspects was shot in his right leg.
That suspect ran out of the restaurant with the victim’s firearm, but the victim went after him. The victim drove his vehicle into him, thus causing him to receive further injuries. The victim was thus able to retrieve his firearm with 15 matching rounds of ammunition, and he immediately reported the incident to the Police.
The injured suspect, who was subsequently arrested, has been identified as a 21-year-old security guard of ‘B’ Field, Sophia. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he has been admitted as a patient under Police guard.
Detectives have since retrieved CCTV footage and are reviewing same. The victim’s firearm and ammunition were lodged, and further investigations are ongoing.
