Bandit escapes with $ 1.2M in midday robbery

a taxi driver was on Thursday afternoon shot during an armed robbery at Oronoque and Charlotte Streets, Georgetown.

Guyana Times understands that around 12:30h, the man dropped off a woman, Elda Belle, who was just about to make a payment at the Jailing Auto Store before a lone gunman pulled up on the western side of Oronoque Street and grabbed the bag t she was carrying, which contained some $1.2 million in cash.Jailing 2

When this publication arrived on the scene, the visibly shaken woman was speaking with Police investigators, giving an account of what had just transpired. This publication has learnt that the driver, reportedly a Cuban, was shot in the leg during the ordeal which lasted several minutes. According to reports, a Queensway security vehicle transported the man to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Eyewitnesses informed this newspaper that after shooting the man, the gunman then got into the passenger seat of a dark blue Toyota 212 getaway car. Police quickly rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area.

An eyewitness told media operatives how the events unfolded.

“I observed a guy came out the car with a gun. I went for cover because I’m unarmed and I heard shots fired – I thought they were entering Jailing, [but] they were not, so when the shots fired, a guy came in here and didn’t speak English, came in here and blood was coming down his leg and when I looked up I saw a guy go back and he had a bag with him. He jumped in the (Toyota) 212 and sped away,” the eyewitness recounted. Guyana Times understands that two .32 spent shells were recovered from the scene as Police continue their investigations.
