A 21-year-old man was shot dead on Sunday evening by a licensed firearm holder shortly after he and an accomplice robbed a Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara (EBD) family.

The dead man has been identified as Dominic Downer of Lot 8 Walker Terrace, La Penitence, Georgetown. His accomplice managed to escape from the scene.
Based on information received, Downer and a second person invaded the Lot 29 Hendbury, Nandy Park home and held the occupants at gunpoint during which they demanded cash and jewellery.
Out of fear, an undisclosed sum of money and a quantity of jewellery were handed over to the perpetrators. Not satisfied, the men collected several mobile phones belonging to the victims.
However, eyewitnesses confirmed that there were at least four men at the scene of the robbery.
Guyana Times understands that during the ordeal, family members would have made efforts to connect to Delta Security Services to no avail.
Out of frustration and anguish, an alarm was raised and the men attempted to escape but were confronted by an armed citizen.
There was an exchange of gunfire and it was at that time, Downer was shot and killed. At this time, residents rushed to the aid of the terrorised family.
Police in a statement related that a mobile phone belonging to one of the victims was found in Downer’s possession while an unlicensed pistol with three live rounds of ammunition was recovered in close proximity to the body.
Before fleeing the scene, his accomplices would have discharged several rounds.
When the Guyana Times visited the family on Monday, one occupant who was at home at the time refused to offer a comment. However, Narvini Dewnath, another occupant of the house in a social media post detailed that it was not the first time they were robbed by armed men.
She explained “four young boys decided to climb into our home and robbed us, one recently released from prison. One died. We got robbed in 2016 and today (Sunday) again. What did we do to deserve this?” she questioned.
She alleged that despite attempts to alert the security firm, no one was sent to their assistance.
Meanwhile, Police have launched an investigation into the robbery and the fatal shooting of the alleged bandit. They are also on the hunt for the escaped bandit.
