Bandits beat pensioner, shotgun stolen during home invasion

A shotgun was taken from a pensioner on Friday after he was beaten during a home invasion. A domestic worker was also bound during the invasion.
Reports are that between 08:00h and 10:00h on Friday, 73-year-old William Venkatasammi of Plot 8 Co-op Scheme, Tain Settlement, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), was at home when he was approached by a man, who enquired whether he wanted his yard weeded.
Venkatasammi contracted the man and went into the yard to give him instructions. However, the man, who posed as a ‘weeder’, immediately held the pensioner, placing the cutlass to his neck while his accomplice brandished a handgun.
The duo demanded cash and jewellery.
Venkatasammi along with his maid, who was identified as 38-year-old Janet Hasnoo, was taken to the upper flat of the house where they were bound and placed in the living room as the duo ransacked the house in search of valuables.
During the ordeal, Hasnoo was beaten about her body. The men escaped with $200,000; US$300; TT$100, a cellular phone, one flat-screen television set, an electric grinder and the licensed 12-gauge shotgun along with over 80 live rounds of matching ammunition.
Police were notified immediately after the robbery and an investigation has been launched.
