A 68-year-old businessman is now counting his losses after two armed bandits stormed into his shop and robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash.
The traumatised man operates a shop in the lower flat of his two-storey home in Vigilance, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Reports are that about 23:15h on Tuesday, the elderly man closed his shop and was in the process of restocking his refrigerator when he fell asleep in a chair.
He was awakened by two bandits, one of whom pointed a gun to his face while demanding that he comply with their demands. Guyana Times was told that the suspects entered the shop by removing the louvre panes from the windows.
According to the man, the two perpetrators demanded that he hand over the money obtained from the day’s sales, as well as other valuables.
He told Police that he did not respond promptly and the bandits hit him several times about his body with the gun and demanded that he hand over the cash.
This publication understands that the men managed to locate a box with cash that the man had inside of his shop. Guyana Times was told that after the duo opened the box, they appeared satisfied with the loot, and fled.
The shop owner managed to alert persons about the robbery and Police ranks were summoned to the scene. Police have since launched an investigation and are seeking to obtain Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage from nearby security cameras to identify the men.
