A father of two was on Friday evening shot dead by two motorcycle bandits at ‘C’ Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown, after which they escaped with an undisclosed sum of money.
Dead is 42-year-old Andre Alexander of Lot 394 Section 4, C Field Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

He was reportedly shot once to the chest and succumbed while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Reports received revealed that the now dead man and his wife were in the shop when the two men approached on a motorcycle and requested three loaves of bread.
The pillion rider took out a $5000 bill to pay and while Alexander was in the process of making change, he whipped out a gun and demanded cash. Upon seeing this, the man’s wife, Beverly Alexander ran towards their home which is a stone’s throw away and raised an alarm.
However, her husband refused to cooperate and the suspect grabbed the money he had in his hand and discharged several rounds in the process. One of the bullets reportedly struck the bread vendor to the chest.
Upon realising that the man was shot, the two young men escaped on the motorcycle. At the home of the dead man, his wife was too distraught to speak to this publication but her brother-in-law, Olton Brotherson, explained that he spoke to his now dead brother 15 minutes before to the shooting incident.

He noted that he was at home when he received a telephone call informing him that his brother was shot and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
According to the distraught brother, as he arrived at the medical facility, he was told that his brother was nursing a gunshot injury to his chest and the doctors were attending to him. He added that while the full details of the shooting was not at his disposal, he noted that his brother was robbed and killed by two men who later escaped on a motorcycle.
Brotherson further stated that his brother and his sister-in-law have been in the business for the past six years. “Well they work and when they come home they would sell until like 8:30 (20:30h) in the night and then come in,” the brother added.
His brother, he added, worked at Banks DIH and his sister-in-law works at the Georgetown Public Hospital. With respect to Police investigations, the aggrieved man stated that the Police were at the scene on Friday evening following the shooting incident and returned to the area early Saturday morning but they are still to make an arrest.
He remembers his brother for his kind and helpful attitude to his family and friends but more so, the people in the community. “He was a very, very, helpful person,” he reiterated. Meanwhile, the dead man’s mother, who is a former matron at the GPHC, was in a state of shock and was in tears when Guyana Times visited.
She noted that she was standing on the platform of her home when she heard what sounded like gunshots but thought it was squibs. Within a few minutes, she received news that her son was shot and injured during a robbery.
“I got the call from a neighbour who told me that two men shot at Andre and took away his money… then they say that he was shot and taken to the hospital,” the woman said. Soon after, she received the devastating news that her second son was dead.
Alexander leaves to mourn his wife, two daughters and one brother among other relatives. His body is at the GPHC mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police are continuing their investigations.
