Bandits rob businessman, son of $2.4M

A businessman and his son were on Monday relieved of a total of $2.4 million in cash by four armed bandits who invaded their Canal No 1 Polder, West Bank Demerara (WBD) property. The businessman, 64-year-old Narinedeo Jairam, was also beaten to the head during the ordeal.
Based on reports received, on the day in question between 10:30h and 10:50h, four unidentifiable males, one of whom was armed with a handgun, entered the businessman’s yard.
At the time, the businessman had just returned home from conducting business at Gafoor’s and Sons at Nismes, WBD, and was having his breakfast in a hammock under his house. The faces of the men were partially covered with rags.
However, upon entering the man’s yard, they confronted the businessman and dealt him one blow to his left side forehead, causing him to bleed. One of the bandits held down the businessman as the others turned their attention to the domestic worker. She too was dealt several blows about her body while the men demanded the keys to the house. As a result of the assault, the woman sustained injuries to her left side chin.
After getting the keys, the armed men went into the house and walked towards a canister which was secured with a lock. They reportedly broke the lock and removed $2.2 million that it contained.
Meanwhile, during the ordeal, the pensioner’s son, Ammardatt Jairam, 40, turned up at the house and he too was pounced on by the armed men and relieved of $200,000.
The men then made good their escape in a waiting white motor car. The pensioner and the domestic worker were both taken to the Canal Health Centre where they were treated for their injuries received and sent away.
The matter was reported to the police and an investigation was launched.
