Banks DIH launches Berbice leg of GT Beer 5/5 tapeball tournament
Banks DIH Limited on Sunday launched its Berbice leg of the 5-5 tapeball tournament which is being played nationally.
The company says it is hoping to have more communities participating by limiting each team to seven players.
The Bank DIH Limited 5/5 tapeball competition has a first prize of $1 million. The tournament is being run countrywide.
The launching ceremony for the Berbice leg took place on Sunday at the Port Mourant Community Centre, one of the three venues in the region where matches will be played.
GT Beer Brand Manager Dwayne Bristol explained that the idea behind limiting each innings to five overs is to allow for more participation in the tournament.
“The concept behind it being a 5/5 rather a 10/10 is that we wanted the games to be shorter and more exciting and also we wanted to have a wider scope of teams participating; not just the regular cricket clubs but community cricketers – the average person. That is why we made it five overs, so anybody on a good day can put up good score or probably defend a low score, because it is just five overs and on the playing day just seven persons per team,” he explained.
This, he said, will make it convenient for an average group of players in a community to form a team thus allowing those who are not into club cricket to participate in the tournament.
As from Sunday last, teams could have started registering. Registration will close on Friday and interested teams can contact any of the following: Omesh at 677-2826, Benga on 667-4121, Pinky on 615-2493, or Abby on 614-3373.
“Or you can contact Banks DIH outlet in New Amsterdam – we are doing registration there,” he added.
“We have $400,000 in cash prizes along with trophies and bragging rights. The winner of the tournament will get $200,000 and with winning this leg of the tournament awards the team a place in the national finals where teams will be battling for $1 million in prizes.”
Play in the Berbice leg commences on January 14, and matches will be played every Sunday until the Berbice finals. (G-4)
