Bartica bids farewell to Mayor Anthony Murray

Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand and Minister within the Ministry, Pauline Sukhai on Monday joined residents of Bartica in bidding farewell to the town’s late Mayor, Anthony Murray, who died last week after suffering a heart attack.
The Ministry, in a post on social media, said the farewell provided an opportunity for the township to reflect on Murray’s service and contribution to Bartica and its residents.
Murray, a longstanding community figure in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), served as a councillor before becoming Mayor following the 2023 Local Government Elections.
He suffered a heart attack on September 8 and was subsequently medevacked to Georgetown for medical attention. He died while receiving treatment.
Following news of his death, tributes were issued by President Dr Irfaan Ali, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Seven and other members of the community.
President Ali had described Murray as someone who devoted himself to the service of Bartica and its development. The President noted Murray’s transition from the business community into public service and his advocacy for infrastructure, economic opportunities and improved services in the township.
The Region Seven RDC also described Murray as a public servant and community leader who contributed to the development and well-being of Bartica.
In its Monday message, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development extended condolences to Murray’s family, loved ones, colleagues and the people of Bartica.
“May his memory continue to be honoured through the community he served,” the Ministry stated.
