Bartica holds inaugural Independence Grade-6 Sports Championships

The Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) Department of Education has held its first Independence Grade-6 Sports Championships. Activities took place in the regional town of Bartica last Thursday and Friday.

Opening the Games, Regional Education Officer Akbar Chindu encouraged the athletes to compete in a fair and friendly environment, and promised them continued support from his department. With pupils from nine primary schools of the Bartica area participating, the disciplines of table tennis, archery, football, cricket, tug-o-war and sprints were run off.
While the traditional “big” primary schools did not perform to expectation, the smaller riverine schools dominated the two days of events as follows:
Archery: won by Agatash and 2 Miles Primary
Table tennis: won by Holy Name Primary
Football: won by Batavia and Karrau Primary
Cricket: won by Agatash and 2 Miles Primary
Sprints, male: won by Agatash and 2 Miles Primary
Sprints, female: won by High Achievers Institute of Learning.
Tug-o-war, male: won by Potaro Primary
Tug-o-war, female: won by Batavia and Karrau Primary.
