Bat infestation halts operations at Charity dental department
The Dental Department at the Charity Oscar Joseph Hospital, in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) is currently out of operation due to an infestation of the bats and ants. The issue of the deplorable conditions within the department was discussed at the last statutory meeting for the Regional Democratic Council (RDC).
Meanwhile, Chairman for the Health and Sanitation Committee and People’s Progressive Party RDC Councillor, Arnold Adams, explained that the current conditions at the facility were inhumane; as such, the RDC had decided that a site visit was necessary. On Tuesday, a thorough inspection was conducted by a party comprising RDC Councillors, Julian Cummings, Hardat Narine, Beatrice Mittelholozer, along with hospital Steward Omkar Persaud, Regional Health Officer Afarah Khan and other officials attached to the healthcare system in Region Two.
According to Adams, he has been advocating for a total transformation of the Charity Oscar Joseph Hospital for some time, however, no meaningful follow-ups were done by officials at the RDC.
He said too that several recommendations were made from the RDC level but the situation remained the same, affecting the poor and vulnerable. He therefore called on Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence to intervene, since residents are being inconvenienced.
Guyana Times, however understands that works for the rehabilitation of the dental department were submitted and tendered. Patients seeking the services of the department are referred to the Anna Regina Health Centre.
Residents living in the North of Region Two, including the Pomeroon River, have to incur additional expenses to venture to the Anna Regina Health Centre to access dental services.
During recent interviews with persons seeking the service, they have all related their concerns over the deplorable conditions at the dental department.
