Battery thief fined $15,000

A man, who admitted to stealing a battery from a motor vehicle, was fined $15,000 on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

Twenty-nine-year old Kumar Shaw appeared before Principle Magistrate Leron Daly and admitted to the charge which stated that on July 20, 2019 at Regent Street, Georgetown, he stole one motor vehicle battery valued at $22,000, property of Kim DeSantos.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh told the court that on July 20, the Virtual Complainant secured her minibus and retired to bed. However, the following day, she discovered the battery compartment open and the battery missing.
A report was made and upon investigation of CCTV footage, Shaw was seen removing the battery. He was arrested and charged for the simple larceny. However, the battery was not recovered.
The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, fined Shaw $15,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in him serving two months imprisonment.
