Batting collapse seals humiliating loss for Guyana U-19s

Guyana Under-19s ended their preliminary round campaign in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 50-Over Championship on a disappointing note after suffering a crushing 219-run defeat to the Windward Islands on Monday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Windward Islands piled up an imposing 315 for nine from their allotted 50 overs, thanks to a dominant batting display led by Captain Theo Edward and opener Derwin Lewis.
The pair laid the perfect platform with a commanding opening partnership of 157, putting the Guyanese bowlers under pressure from the onset.
Edward led by example with a blistering 87 from just 58 deliveries, striking 11 fours and four sixes before departing. Lewis provided excellent support with 73 from 71 balls, an innings decorated with five fours and six sixes.

Late in the innings, Cody Fontinelle added further punishment with a quickfire 33 off just 20 balls, smashing one four and four sixes to propel the Windwards beyond the 300-run mark.
Despite the heavy scoring, Adrian Hetmyer was the standout performer with the ball for Guyana, claiming four wickets for 47 runs, while Gilbert Griffith supported well with three for 36.
Faced with a daunting target of 316, Guyana’s batting line-up collapsed spectacularly, producing one of their poorest performances of the tournament.
Wickets tumbled regularly as no specialist batsman managed to offer meaningful resistance. In a telling statistic, number 11 batsman Darwin Joseph emerged as Guyana’s top scorer with a brisk 33 from just 19 balls, highlighting the extent of the batting failure.
Guyana were eventually dismissed for just 96 in 17 overs, handing the Windward Islands a comprehensive 219-run victory.
Elran Glasgow was the chief destroyer with four wickets for 30 runs, while Tyler Venner provided excellent support, taking three for 11 as the Guyanese innings folded well short of the target.
The defeat brought a disappointing end to Guyana’s preliminary round campaign, with the team failing to build on the promise shown in their lone victory earlier in the tournament. The comprehensive nature of the loss exposed significant shortcomings with the bat, as the Guyanese were unable to cope with the disciplined Windward Islands bowling attack after already conceding a formidable total.
