The South Dakota racing Circuit is expected to become a battlefield today when the nation’s top motor racers go head-to-head for championship honours at the National Race of Champions 2.
The numbers of competitors is expected to be high, since, according to Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club President Ramez Mohamed, the pits were packed on Saturday, with all the drivers and riders engaged in final preparation for the meet.
The GMR&SC president is appealing to motor racing fans to come out in their numbers to support this meet.
He acknowledged that numerous persons attend the November meet to cheer for their Guyanese drivers, and is contending that the same enthusiasm is need at the local meets, to encourage more drivers to compete.
Mohamed himself will be competing in the Group Two category at the meet. He explained that when drivers participate at these local meets, it gives them a chance, ahead of the favoured November CMRC final round, to become privy to any flaws their machines might have. Some intriguing battles are expected in today’s meet, since veteran racers Andrew King and `Sir’ Mark Vieira are set to renew their old rivalry. Both Group Four drivers have had a prolonged absence from the sport, with King returning only last April to compete at the first edition of the National Race of Champions in a Mazda RX7.
Vieira on the other hand, widely known for his exploits on the track, is expected to be seated in a three-rotary Mazda RX-8. With the addition of seasoned campaigners Rupie Shewjattan, Vishok Persaud and Danny Persaud, action in the Group Four category is likely to be fiery.
Sports Tuner will see wars being waged by the likes of the ever consistent Daniel Deokie and Shairma Khan; while the Group Two has Chet Singh, Shan Seejattan and Shairz Roshandin in the mix.
The bike races should provide ultimate crowd attraction, with reigning Caribbean Champion Matthew Vieira set to take the track amidst challenges mounted for supremacy by Kevin Persaud, John Bennett, Ravi Singh and Heemand Boodhram.
22 races are carded for the day, and action gets underway from 08:00 hrs. Tickets for adults are $1000, while children under 12 would pay a mere $500.
The meet is sponsored by ANSA McAL, Prem’s Electrical, B.M. Soat, Mohamed’s Enterprise, Ready Mix, Special Auto, Japarts, Ticket Master, Palm Court, KGM, MAC batteries, S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction, L Mahabir and Sons Cambio, and Choke Gas Station.
