The Berbice Bridge Company Inc on Thursday hosted its annual Christmas tree lighting up and invited children from nearby communities, along with staff and their families.
The BBCI commenced commercial operations on 24 December 2008, and started an internal Christmas tree lighting up from 2009 until 2012 with its employees only. However in 2013 the company hosted a grand Christmas tree lighting. The public was invited and toys were distributed. The company then decided to incorporate the grand Christmas tree lighting up in its calendar of activities.
During this year’s lighting up Chief Executive Officer Omadat Samaroo gave a brief history of Christmas Tree lighting up which is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and Christmas is a widely observed holiday, celebrated on 25 December by billions of people around the world. Christmas is a time for giving and reaching out to family, friends, and others in need which is a priority for BBCI.
He reminded that the Berbice River Bridge was commissioned on December 23, 2008, by the former President Bharrat Jagdeo. On that day all categories of
vehicles were allowed to transit the Bridge free of charge for 24 hours.
He expressed gratitude to the attendees and extended best wishes for the Christmas Season.
During the course of the event the children and invitees were given ice cream, a toy and a party bag. Three senior citizens from the Rosignol/D’ Edward area were given hampers. At the end of the official ceremony, everyone proceeded to the lawns where they witnessed the lighting up of the Christmas tree.
In the past the company sponsored many events that benefited the communities both on the eastern and western ends of the Berbice River Bridge.
For this year the company has so far received 83 public relation requests and managed to approve 70.
