Numerous primary school students around central Georgetown are currently benefiting from the Beginner’s Table Tennis Programme organised by the Ministry of Social Cohesion/National Sports Commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Table Tennis Association.
The activity allows for 24 students from select schools to visit the National Gymnasium and receive hands-on beginner’s training from a group of experienced coaches. The group of 24 is made up of students between the ages of 6 and 11.
National Table Tennis Coach Linden Johnson explained that the programme has
been ongoing since the early 2000s, but it has been on and off. However, owing to the great relationship that has been forged with both Ministries, it is expected that the training will become a regular fixture. Within the one-hour sessions, students are taught the basic skills and rules of the sport. The Programme acts as a means of publicising the sport to the younger generation. Additionally, Johnson explained that it was the Federation’s hope that young talents would be birthed out of the Programme. Last Thursday, students of the Rama Krishna Primary School were surprised with a visit from the Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr George Norton. The Minister took the time to interact with students and play a few rounds of the game with them.
The exercise will conclude on May 4 with a tournament for all the participating schools.
