Action in the West Demerara Cricket Association-organized Elroy Round Robin T20 Competition continued over the weekend with Belle Vue claiming victory over Spice Rebels in a nail-biting fixture played at the Belle Vue ground.
Having won the toss in conditions that favoured fielding, Belle Vue chose to bowl, and the Spice Rebels were inserted at the wicket to begin their innings.
The Rebels struggled to cope with the disciplined bowling of the Belle Vue side within the powerplay overs. Wickets fell at regular intervals; but the efforts of R Payne and Jeremiah Singh were just enough to take them over the 100-run mark, and their innings ended at 109-9.
R. Payne ended on 34 not-out, while Jeremiah Singh and Narendra Persaud each contributed 13 crucial runs.
The leading Belle Vue bowler was Ryan Seecharran, with figures of 3-15. He was supported by Randy Ramrup’s 3-16 and Daniel Roberts’s 2-20.
In reply, Belle Vue produced 111-9 in 19.2 overs, with captain Safraz Baksh, the #9 batsman, and Devon Harris, the #11 batsman, each contributing 16 very precious runs to get their team over the line with four balls to spare.
Like their opponents, they had found themselves in deep trouble in the early stages of their innings, and could not hold vital partnerships, but lost key wickets at critical moments of the game.
Ryan Seecharran with 15 and Vishal Gannie with 14 also contributed precious runs to the Belle Vue total; while the Rebels’ bowling attack was led by Narendra Persaud, who bagged 4-16 off 4 overs; Richie Looknauth, who took 2-15, and Shane Persaud’s 2-23.
