Bent Street perfect in play-off round

Defending champions Bent Street eased to a 6-2 victory over Stevedore Housing Scheme to seal their spot in the group stages of the 2nd Petra Organised Futsal Championships at the National Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

Watched by another massive and vocal crowd, the thumping victory was orchestrated by a Colin Nelson brace (17th and 26th) with supporting goals from Konata Manning (6th), Okeene Fraser (15th), Kelsey Benjamin (23rd) and Sheldon Profitt (24th) while for the losers, Shane Morris (8th) and Dorwin Filter (25th) netted.

In another match that produced a flurry of goals, West Front Road-Gold is Money hammered Camp Street All-Stars 10-2 on the back of hat-tricks from Carl Tudor and Roy Cassou. Tudor rocked the back of the net in the 7th, 9th and 28th while Cassou had his conversions in the 18th, 26th and 27th. Randolph Wagner added two in the 10th and 25th while Andre Webber (20th) and Jamal Pedro (29th) were the other two scorers; an own goal in the 12th and Ron Lyken in the 13th were the only joy for the All-stars.

Current West Demerara/ East Bank Guinness Greatest of the Streets Champions did not have any joy in the city as they were trounced 4-1 by Back Circle. The complete team effort by Back Circle saw Sylvester Richardson (2nd), Stephan McLean (14th), Akeemo Anthony (15th) and Keron Joshua (20th) guiding their side into the next round; Dexroy Adams netted for the opposition.

Similarly, Akeem Jaikisson hat-trick led Sophia to 5-2 win against Alexander Village. Jaikissoon breached the defence in the 2nd, 8th and 29th while teammates Desmond Cottam (30th) and Shem Porter (15th). Kevin Gordon (5th) and Ryan October (13th) netted for Alexander Village.

Tiger Bay mauled Hustlers 6-1. Deon Alfred scored twice in the eighth and 19th minute, while Keoma Gravesande and James Meredith netted in the 15th and 25th minute, respectively.

Own goals in the sixth and 13th minute added to the Hustlers’ misery. On target in the loss was Anthony Sancho in the ninth minute.

Other teams to confirm their passage to the group stages were Sparta Boss, Broad Street Bullies, Tucville, West Back Road, Agricola and North East La Penitence.

Upon the completion of the round-robin stage, the top two finishers and the best two third-ranked teams from the respective groups, will progress to the quarterfinal phase.

The winner of the tournament is set to pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy; while the second, third and fourth-placed finishers will collect $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively and the corresponding accolade.
