Berbice-based sports club hosts back-to-school programme

The Kendall’s Union Sports Club, based in #19 Village, East Coast Berbice, has been able to resume its slew of community outreach activities, beginning with a ‘back-to-school’ programme.
According to a missive from this sports club, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and recent inclement weather conditions, the club had had to put all of its activities on hold. However, it is happy to resume fulfilling part of its mandate by hosting not just one, but two community outreach activities: the back-to-school programme and a programme catering to the needs of senior citizens.

For the back-to-school programme, the club has entertained approximately 100 children from Kendall’s Union and contiguous villages, all of whom received a school bag filled with school supplies and snacks.
And for the senior citizens’ initiative, the club has held an event for 45 such persons, all drawn from within the community, each of whom was given a food hamper and lunch.
These activities were sponsored by Shudeo Bachan (Amar) & his family. Shudeo has been with the club over the years, and is the official sponsor of the club’s senior and junior cricket teams.

During the short programme held to mark these activities, remarks were made by the Borlam-Kintyre NDC Chairman Hitnarine and representatives of the sponsor. The club’s President, Executives and members also expressed gratitude to Mr. Bachan for his longstanding support to the club and the community.
The Club’s President, Albert Budhoo, explained that it was an honour for the club to do its part to help the children of the community, and he detailed the importance of attending school and having a good education, so that the children can tap into the opportunities that are now available.
For the seniors, he related that most of the time our seniors are forgotten, and he wanted to recognise them and thank them for their sacrifice and contributions made to the development of the community and Guyana.
He also stated that the club is committed to continue supporting residents in any way it can, and he encouraged all residents, especially the youths, to join the club, which offers recreational and other opportunities for persons in the field of sports, education and skills development.
