Berbice cyclists battling for supremacy in New Amsterdam today
Top riders in Berbice will assemble in New Amsterdam today, Friday March 18, for the Flying Ace-organized cycle race. This circuit race, which will pedal off from 13:00h, is open to cyclists only from Regions Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Cyclists will assemble in front of the Rainbow Beer Garden on Republic Road and Charles Place, and race towards Coburg Street, into Main Street, and through Stanleytown onto the Tacama Turn at Republic Road for a total of 10 laps.
Prizes would be awarded to the first four finishers in the senior category, the first three veterans, and the top junior rider. Eight sprint prizes would be up for grabs.
This race is in collaboration with the Mashramani celebrations in New Amsterdam, while the Arokium Funeral Home, the Jerrick Funeral Home, the Dexter Funeral Home, the Suresh Business Complex and Big G Lumberyard are among the sponsors who have come on board this event.
According to Flying Ace Cycling Coach Randolph Roberts, this race has been given the green light by the COVID-19 Task Force, and the likes of Romello Crawford, Andre ‘Padlock’ Green and Mario Washington will be battling for supremacy.
During the last race, which was held on Sunday last in Region Three, Padlock got the better of his fellow Berbician Romello Crawford in a sprint which saw Jamual John coming out on top.
This race will serve as another showdown for Padlock and Crawford, both of whom are recognized wheelsmen in Guyana. Region five’s Junior Niles is also expected to continue his form, after placing in the top three among veterans in last Sunday’s race in Region Three.
Additionally, the Cheddi Jagan Memorial Race is set to be held on Sunday in Region Three, as against its customary venue Region Six.
