Following two rounds of action in the 2018 Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior Women’s 50-Over Inter-County tourney, defending champs Berbice will face rivals Demerara for the crown today at Lusignan.
Both sides took full advantage of a very inexperienced Essequibo team, thumping the Cinderella ladies on respective occasions to help set up the final showdown. After disposing of Essequibo on Sunday in the opener at Bourda by eight wickets, Demerara should feel confident going into the finals.
Veteran all-rounder Erva Giddings will look to pull out another MVP performance in the final
All-rounder Mandy Mangru; opener Latoya Smith; left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz, who won the MVP for her 4-5 versus Essequibo and national players skipper Akaze Thompson and Loshanna Toussaint showed glimpses of form and will play a key role against the strong Berbice team.
Left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz could play a crucial role for Demerara
From the Ancient County perspective, the Tremayne Smartt-led Berbice flexed their muscles against Essequibo, inevitably warming up for the Demerara challenge. Senior Windies and Guyana pacer Erva Giddings was the instrument of destruction, blasting 45 before bagging an impressive 5-5 with her left-arm pace.
Half-centurion Ketana Mentore, opener Shenita Grimmond, and Smartt all played crucial roles in the 161-run thumping of Essequibo on Monday. With the performance of Giddings, Berbice will fancy their chances of overcoming the Demerara threat.
Following the 50-Over tournament, the ladies will have a few days to further organise themselves ahead of the T20 leg. The first ball is set to bowl off at 09:00h, weather permitting.
