The T20 format of the 2019 GCB Senior Female Inter-County Tournament commenced with the Select Under-19 and Berbice battling while Demerara challenged Essequibo. Both matches were played at the Everest Ground, as the
rain affected play early up.
In the first match, Select Under-19 took first strike and managed to score 56 for 5 off 17.4 overs. Africa Gentle top-scored with 25 runs while Shabika Gajnabi supported with 14. Bowling for Berbice, player of the match Plaffiana Millington picked up two wickets for 13 while Sheneta Grimmond, Dian Prahalad and Ashmini Munisar collected one wicket each.
Berbice required 15 runs off five overs for victory under the Duckworth Lewis and Stern (DLS) method. They raced to 17 for 1, to win the match with ease; Cherry-Ann Fraser was the lone wicket taker for the Select Under-19 team.
In the second match, Demerara won the toss and inserted Essequibo to bat.
Essequibo posted 77 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Aniliza D’Aguiar top-scored with 18, Lisa Charles and Estelle Lewis contributed 10 runs respectively to the total. Bowling for Demerara, Hassana Mohamed and Kaysia Shultz picked up two wickets for 13 and six runs respectively. Demerara replied and successfully achieved their target scoring 78 for 4 in 13 overs. Lashuna Toussaint top-scored
with 40 runs, which saw her being awarded the player-of-the-match award. Bowling for Essequibo, Analiza D’Aguiar claimed 2 for 11, while Vanita Balkishun collected 1 for 28 runs.
Round 2 of the T20 tournament continues today, Friday, February 8, 2019 at Everest Cricket Ground. Cricket lovers and spectators can look forward to seeing Essequibo challenging Berbice from 09:00 h while Demerara will oppose Select Under-19 from 13:30h.
