Berbice firefighters battle 2 fires within 6 hours

Firefighters in Berbice were forced to respond to two fires within six hours. The first fire occurred shortly after 20:00h on Sunday night and the other at about 01:00h on Monday morning. Reports are that shortly after 01:00h on Monday, flames were seen coming from the Lot 4 Adelphi, East Canje building but the occupant, a 24-year-old cattle farmer, was not at home.

Police have since said that the owner, Delory Paul, was at a party when he received information that his home was on fire. This newspaper was told that the man rushed home and observed that smoke was emanating from the house. Neighbours formed a bucket brigade and contained the fire until the fire service arrived. As a result of the fire, there was extensive damage to the floor and wall where what appeared to be a mattress was placed. The fire service has since launched an investigation. Meanwhile, at about 20:00h on Sunday, a fire was seen coming from a building at Lot 122 – Area R – Babu John, Corentyne. Raymond Mangru, 30, who occupied the house, said he was not at home but was informed that the building was on fire. When he arrived, the entire house was in flames. A unit from the Rose Hall Town Fire Station responded and was able to contain the blaze. Mangru is self-employed. An investigation has been launched into that fire also. (G4)
