Several Berbicians became homeowners on Friday after they received keys to their new low-income homes in Hampshire Housing Scheme in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), Sherwyn Greaves presented the keys to the beneficiaries in the presence of other senior officials from the department.
The Hampshire Scheme encompasses a total of 100 homes. Each dwelling boasts dimensions of 20×30 feet (600 square feet) and features two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and sanitary facilities.

Mohamed Nazir and his spouse, Bebe Fatima Reasat, emphasised the significance of this achievement, as they have been renting for nearly eight years. They eagerly anticipate redirecting their rental expenses towards other endeavours.
“It’s a great achievement, for example, the money that was going to rent it could always come in to do something else […] it can even be additional savings for my kids for their future for their studies,” Nazir explained.

Meanwhile, young Malica Moore expressed her satisfaction at the Government’s commitment to promoting homeownership for young professionals like herself. She eagerly looks forward to occupying her new residence.
The Hampshire Housing Scheme is already fully equipped with essential utilities, including electricity and water, and has benefited from first-phase infrastructure development, such as access roads, drainage, and culverts.
The construction of these homes was supervised by CH&PA’s Projects Department. Homes were also handed over to allottees of the Ordnance Fort Lands Housing Scheme on Friday.
