Arrested after he reportedly raped and robbed a 64-year-old woman, 47-year-old Brian Luke of Sand Reef, Albion Corentyne Berbice was on Friday arraigned for the heinous crime before Magistrate Renita Singh in the Reliance Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the charge of Rape, under Section 3(3) of the Sexual Offences Act Chapter 8:03, and was remanded to prison until September 14, 2021.
The matter has been transferred to the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
It was reported that, on Monday last, the 64-year-old woman was at home when the suspect entered her home, raped her, and carted off $200,000 in cash. After the perpetrator had left the premises, the elderly woman reportedly raised an alarm, and neighbours went to her assistance.
The matter was reported to the Police, and, based on information gathered, the suspect was arrested at his home, where a portion of the cash was recovered.
In February last, two men were remanded to prison for the brutal rape of a 98-year-old woman at her home in Rose Hall Town, Corentyne. The woman, who lived alone, was also severely beaten, and was reportedly found in a traumatised state by a neighbour who had gone to check on her.
The woman reportedly had told the neighbour, “Them boys come in and beat me up”. She had several injuries about her body, including a swollen face and bruises in several places.
The woman’s caretaker was summoned to the house, and she observed blood on the victim’s clothing and bedspread. The caregiver immediately reported the matter to the Police, after which the elderly woman was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where a medical certificate was issued confirming that she had been raped.
Acting on information received, several persons were arrested, but after further investigations, charges were instituted against two of them. Their trial is expected to commence shortly.
