Berbice man drowns during family outing in Essequibo
A family New Year’s Day outing at Lake Eleven in Huis’t Dieren, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) ended abruptly after a 36-year-old man went into the water and never resurfaced.
Despite a comprehensive search for the man’s body, it was never pulled from the lake until Thursday. The police have since identified the dead man as Gowkarran Inderjeet, also known as “Karran” or “Bud,” of No. 3 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
Based on reports received, Inderjeet had travelled to the Essequibo Coast to spend time with his wife, son and other family members. During the visit, a family outing was planned as he was only in the region for a short time.
However, at about 16:30h on Wednesday, Inderjeet and his 6-year-old son ventured into the lake for a swim. At the time, he was carrying his son on his shoulder.
As they were in the water, the now-dead man reportedly veered off into the deep part of the lake and went underwater while his son remained at the surface.
Guyana Times understands that persons witnessed what was happening and rushed to aid the father and son. They, however, managed to save the child but unfortunately, the father disappeared beneath the black water.
An alarm was raised and several search parties were established but came empty-handed as the area started to get dark. The search continued on Thursday and it was then the man’s lifeless body was pulled from the lake.
The body was taken to the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem. (Raywattie Deonarine)
