Swift investigations by Police have led to the capture of a male suspect in connection with the robbery of Kamal’s Gift Centre, located in the WK Shopping Mall at Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni).
The store, which is owned by Bartica’s Deputy Mayor Kamal Persaud, was broken into on Sunday and over .5 million worth of jewellery, watches, mobile phones and portable DVD players was stolen.
A senior Police rank has informed Guyana Times that over 85 per cent of the stolen merchandise was recovered in the possession of a male suspect who was arrested. The senior rank also explained that the suspect will be charged by the end of this week. Meanwhile, Police in an official release confirmed that the prime suspect, who broke into the Deputy Mayor’s variety store, was arrested on Tuesday morning. Police disclosed that entry was gained through an eastern window on the upper flat of the building.

“Diligent work by ranks of the Guyana Police Force led to the arrest of a 38-year-old Berbician in Bartica early [Tuesday] morning. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of some of the stolen articles, inclusive of a cellular phone and pieces of jewellery which were positively identified by its owner. Later, the suspect took investigators to a house where he handed over almost 85 per cent of the stolen items. He has since given the lawmen vital information as to where the remaining items can be retrieved,” the official Police statement noted.
Initial reports indicated that a bandit or bandits broke into the store sometime between 03:00h and 05:00h by climbing through a window in the upper flat of the Mall before breaking a lock and executing the larceny.
The town’s Deputy Mayor, in an interview with this newspaper, disclosed that this was the fourth such incident in 12 years since her business’ establishment and the second in less than three months. In September last, several mobile phones tuned to the value of $ 1.2 million were stolen from her business. Preliminary investigations had revealed that the two most recent larcenies areconnected. Guyana Times was told on Tuesday that Police are working on all leads in pursuing other suspects.
