An East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) man was on Thursday sentenced to 50 months’ imprisonment for beating a 6-year-old child with a hammer.
Kevin Fraser, 25, of Adelphi Village, East Canje, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranath Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court where he was charged for the unlawful assault committed on his nephew.
He pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
The court heard that on Monday last, Fraser returned home at about 17:00h under the influence of alcohol and began to use a series of explicit language. He later went to his wife and asked her for his cutlass but the woman allegedly hid same from him.
In retaliation, the drunken man reportedly spat in the pot of porridge after which he hit it off the stove. The hot pot and its content reportedly fell on his wife’s foot and after she objected to his behaviour, he started to assault her.
She managed to run out of the house and go to the police station where she made a report. Whilst at the station, the man turned his attention on his nephew. He reportedly dragged the lad onto the muddied dam and began to beat him with a hammer.
The Police eventually turned up at the scene but Fraser managed to escape. He was subsequently arrested. The injured lad was picked up and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was treated.
