In the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB’s) senior female inter-county T20 tournament, Berbice thumped arch-rivals Demerara by eight wickets, while Essequibo humbled the Select XI by 23 runs.
Both matches were played at the Everest Cricket Club ground in Georgetown, and were watched by vocal and partisan gatherings.
In the big match of the day, played in the afternoon, Demerara posted 74-7 in 20 overs, after some disciplined bowling from “player of the match” Plaffina Millington, who claimed 3-10 in four top overs.
Captain Cherry-Ann Fraser top-scored for Demerara with 16, but no other batter reached double figures. Extras contributed 13 to the Demerara total. Erva Giddings, Tremayne Smartt and Dian Prahalad each took one wicket.
In reply, Berbice reached the total in 15.1 overs to end on 75-2. Opener Sherica Campbelle top-scored with 26 from 37 balls. Hers was an innings that included four boundaries. She was supported by Katana Mentore, who made 19, and Sheneta Grimmond, who scored an unbeaten 12. Mandy Mangru and Latisa Jordan each had one wicket.
And in the opening match at Everest, Essequibo posted 107-4 in 20 overs, while the Select XI were restricted to 84-7 in their 20 overs. For Essequibo, Kumarie Persaud made 43, while extras contributed 26 to the total.
Karishma Ramnauth, Niveena Ramnauth, Kimberly Sookdeo and Jamie Campbell each took one wicket.
In reply, Niveen Ramnauth top-scored with 17 for the Select XI, and Leah Kamalall made 12. Despite extras contributing 29, the Select XI fell short by 23 runs.
Nafeeza Sabar had 3-12 and Analesia D’Aguiar had 2-18.
The tournament is expected to continue on Monday, with both matches being set for play at Everest.
