WCB accident
The 26-year-old, Berbice welder, who was struck down on August 7 while making his way home in Sheildstown, West Coast Berbice (WCB), succumbed on Thursday night.
Irfaan Ahmad
Irfaan Ahmad, a father of one, died hours after being removed from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Family members of the accident victim are now in a state of shock as they had expected Ahmad to recover.
The welder was struck while making his way home at about 22:00h following his shift at the Blairmont Sugar Estate. The young father was on a pedal cycle when he was struck from behind by a motorcar, which was driven by an overseas-based Guyanese.
As a result of the impact, the man was thrown from his bicycle into the corner of the road.
At this time, the driver of the car, who was still at the scene, was instructed by public-spirited persons to take Ahmad to the hospital, to which he complied. Ahmad was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital but was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was nursing two broken arms and legs, a disconnected hip, spinal injuries and swelling to his brain.
The driver of the motorcar is yet to be charged and family members have since expressed concerns over this fact since he is an overseas-based Guyanese.
Traffic ranks attached to the Blairmont Police Station are also coming in for harsh criticism after they reportedly visited the scene of the accident several days after to take measurements.
