A 40-year-old woman, who allegedly bribed a clearance officer in order for him not to put a previous conviction on her brother’s Police clearance document, was on Monday sentenced to 28 days imprisonment. She was also fined $50,000.
Bibi Azimulla, of New Area, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice – Corentyne) was on trial before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. On Monday, the woman was found guilty of the charge and the sentence was handed down.
The charge had stated that on November 19, 2018, at the Criminal Investigation Headquarters (CID), Eve Leary, Georgetown, Azimulla tried to corrupt Leslyn Halley-Smith, an agent of the State, by paying her $20,000 to not put on a clearance document a previous conviction of brother, Azaad Azimulla.
The woman had denied the charge. The prosecution had contended that on November 19, 2018, Azimulla went into the clearance office at the Criminal Investigation Department and offered the clearance officer the sum of money.
Azimulla was then told of the offence, arrested and taken into custody.
