Better Hope man killed after confronting man who stabbed his friend

A 40-year-old coconut vendor of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD), is now is Police custody after he stabbed two friends on Sunday morning, killing one and injuring the other.

The dead man has been identified as Neil Rampersaud, 31, an engineer of Phulwari Street, Better Hope, ECD. Injured is Mohan Panchu, also of Phulwari Street, Better Hope.
They were both stabbed on two separate occasions on Sunday morning in Better Hope.
It was reported that sometime around 06:35h on Sunday, the suspect and Panchu had a misunderstanding during which the suspect armed himself with a metal rod and dealt Panchu several stabs about his body, causing injuries.
Shortly after the incident, Rampersaud, who was Panchu’s friend and also knew the suspect, learned of the stabbing at about 07:38h. The engineer went to confront the suspect in the vicinity of Zahora Street, Better Hope, and demanded that the suspect turn himself in at the Police station.
This resulted in the two men getting into an altercation during which Rampersaud dealt the suspect two lashes about his body. The suspect, who was armed with a coconut blade at the time, retaliated by also stabbing Rampersaud to his upper left side ribs, causing severe injuries.
After being stabbed, the injured Rampersaud ran away from his attacker and was subsequently rushed to the Woodlands Hospital in Georgetown. It was reported that whilst receiving medical treatment, the 31-year-old man succumbed to his injuries.
Rampersaud’s body was then escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The suspect was later arrested by ranks of the Sparendaam Police Station, and was then escorted to the CC Nicholson Hospital at Nabaclis, ECD, where he was treated and handed over to the cops.
Police said the vendor handed over the murder weapon, and it was lodged. He is presently in Police custody assisting with investigations.
