The Bishops’ High School produced their most dominant performance by comprehensively defeating School of Nations 9-0 in their final group match to qualify for the round-of-sixteen in the sixth annual Milo Schools Football Tournament.
The drubbing occurred on Saturday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue and was led by Jeremiah Joseph who netted a hat-trick with goals in the 36th, 57th and 66th while Lamar Williams scored a brace, netting in the 40th and 49th. Goal continued to rain as Owen Jones (24th), Romeo Bradford (57th), captain Darren Chan (63rd) and Brandon Walters (64th) all made their mark in the lopsided content.
Chan speaking after the match expressed his elation for a well-rounded performance and being able to secure a spot in the next round easily unless Pure Master produce a shocker against the unbeaten Morgan’s Learning Centre.
The captain of the Carmichael Street unit, who was one of the youngest players in the squad when they battled their way to the quarter-finals in the inaugural year, explained they will be looking to intensify their training as from now “they can be no slip-ups”.
Chase Academic Foundation also sauntered to 4-0 victory over closest group rival Annandale Secondary in fixture which was replayed due to power outage; that match had ended 3-0 at half time.
The three-time defending champions continued another perfect year when captain Jeremy Garrett opened the floodgates with a strike in the 16th minute followed by Rashawn Ritch in the 37th; Rondell Peters and Nicholas McArthur closed off proceedings with goals in the 55th and 67th.
In the final fixture of the day Sir Leon’s Lesson trounced St. Roses High 5-0 to end their group matches unbeaten. Zion Grey continued his prolific season by netting in the 19th followed by Luckort Forde (45th), Julian Bamfield (49th), Teon Forde (54th) and Ryan Ramsey (59th).
Uitvlugt Secondary will be playing today from noon against Cummings Lodge who are yet to notch a win.
Christianburg Secondary will get in to action from 13:30h and are already firmly assured of a spot in the knock-out phase unlike their opponents Ann’s Grove, who need a victory to stay in contention.
Runners-up in 2017, Morgan’s Learning Centre are strong favourites to finish the group stage unbeaten as they come against Pure Masters from 15:00h.
The match holds more significance for the latter since BHS who moved ahead into second place. A huge loss could see Pure Masters in the precarious position of having to qualify as one of the four top third-placed teams. The quest is to secure the first place prize of $500,000 which goes towards a school project. Second to fourth, will receive $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively which also go towards school projects. The under-18 tournament is a collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health under the theme, “there is no excuse for violence”.
