Biggest ever Junior Indoor hockey Tournament starts today
The largest junior indoor tournament to date will get underway today as the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) stages their annual Junior Indoor Hockey Championship this weekend at the home of hockey, the National Gymnasium.
This is the fourth year of the event and will feature for the first time, Under-10 and U-13 mixed, boys and Girls U-16 as well as the Inter-School Mixed over the next three days.

m the GHB, the tournament is open to all schools and clubs and will be played as a four-a-side small goal while the U21 will be played as the standard six-a-side competition, utilizing the full court.
This edition of the sporting event will see the largest turn out of teams with over 150 youngsters ready to participate.
To date, 15 teams are registered for the U-13 inclusive of teams from each club and schools such as Marian Academy, Saints Stanislaus College, Christ Church Secondary, School of the Nations, Mae’s Schools, St. John’s College and North Georgetown Secondary.
The tournament will be used as a grooming ground for young talent, having notable success stories emerging from the competition such as Alyssa Xavier, Aroydy Brandford, Aliyah Gordon, Jamraj Assanah, Andrew Stewart and Hilton Chester who have all made it into their senior club teams. At the event there will be food and drinks on sale with all proceeds going to the continued effort to develop the junior programme.
The Under 21 Category will get underway this afternoon from 17:00h while the action will be commencing from 09:00h on Saturday and Sunday and concluding at 19:00h.
The first match slated for today will see the girls from Old Fort take on rivals GCC in the opening game of the tournament. At 18:00h, GCC boys will play against Saints while at 18:30h the Girls from Hikers will come up against Hikers. 19:00h Hikers boys will combat Old Fort and GCC will play Old Fort girls at 19:30h.
At 20:00h GCC boys will play Old Fort and the last game will be Hikers meeting Saints at 20:30H. All matches are in the U-21 category.
Presentations for each category will run off at the end of the respective category finals. The Under 10 and Under 13 will be concluded on Saturday while the other categories will conclude on Sunday.
