Billions in ganja destroyed by Police along Berbice River
Police in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) and agents of the Police Narcotics Branch on Thursday conducted a drug eradication exercise at De Veldt, Berbice River, where 337, 263 kilograms (almost 742,000 pounds) of ganja with a street value of billions was discovered and destroyed.
Based on reports received, the exercise lasted for approximately 11 hours.
The exercise was conducted at three different areas and uncovered 10 fields with 251 earthen banks measuring 42 feet by 20 feet long with approximately 211,220 cannabis sativa plants ranging from two to six feet in height.
In addition, five camps were found along with a drying area. In one of the camps, an estimated 2500 pounds of dried cannabis was found.
A nearby clump of bushes was searched and one Maverick 12-gauge shotgun, along with 49 live cartridges, was found.
A nursery with approximately 200,000 seedlings was also discovered. Police have confirmed that the estimated weight of the dried cannabis was 337, 263 kilograms.
The ganja and camps were destroyed by fire while the firearm and ammunition along with a mobile phone were confiscated and lodged pending further investigation. At the time of the raid, no one was arrested.
