“Birthday boy” killed after car slams into utility pole

A Georgetown resident was in the wee hours of Friday morning killed after the car in which he was travelling slammed into a utility pole at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown. Two others are reportedly in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Dead is 25-year-old Isaiah Corlette of Lot 99 Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown.
Based on information received, the incident occurred at about 01:30h when motorcar PWW 676 which was driven by 25-year-old Mikhail Punch of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara, was proceeding along the roadway with two other passengers which included Corlette and Akeesha Jones of Leopold Street, Work-en-Rust, Georgetown.
Punch reportedly lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a utility pole. As a result of the impact, the occupants were flung from the vehicle where they sustained severe injuries.
They were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) where Corlette was pronounced dead on arrival, while the two others were treated and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Guyana Times understands the three persons were returning home from the usual lime at Plaisance Line Top, where the now dead man started his birthday celebrations.
When this publication visited the home of the deceased, relatives explained that they got the dreaded news at about 02:00h. They were told that the young Corlette was involved in an accident.

Without hesitation, the relatives rushed to the scene only to see the mangled vehicle. They were told that the injured were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. One of the dead man’s relatives told Guyana Times that they were made to understand the driver was under the influence of alcohol which could have contributed to the accident.
“One of his friends tell him not to go but he said that he trust the man so they decide to come home with him. From what I hear, he was drunk.”
Meanwhile Corlette’s father, Shawn Corlette, explained that his son was a cigarette vendor at the Stabroek Market. “… He went to the [Plaisance] Line Top cause today was his birthday so he was starting the birthday early. When they were coming down, I don’t know is what really happen but he went into an accident.”
Corlette leaves to mourn his parents, five brothers and two sisters. Police have launched an investigation into the accident.
