Blackout blankets Georgetown, East Coast

…as transmitter explodes

Residents in Georgetown and along the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara on Monday were subjected to a power outage, after a transmitter explosion around 20:00h at the Kingston Power Station.
The explosion caused the shutdown of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System. Power was later restored to the East Bank of Demerara. In a release, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) begged for consumers’ patience as they worked to restore the power supply to all areas.
The widespread blackout upset many residents who over the past several months have been experiencing a spike in power outages as GPL struggles to provide a reliable power supply.
