‒ Jawahir, Karim cop top awards

When West Bank Berbice Club, Blairmont Cricket Club, recently held its annual award ceremony last Thursday evening, it was Kevon Jawahir and Javed Karim, who were named the most outstanding senior player of the year and senior youth player of the year respectively.

The 21-year-old Kevon Jawahir, who copped the batsman-of-the-year and all-rounder-of-the year awards, was also named cricketer-of-the-year in the senior category.
Meanwhile, teenage sensation and national youth player Javed Karim, 17, was recognised as the most disciplined player of the club as well as the top senior youth batsman, best all-rounder and player of the year.
National Under-15 Captain Marvan Prashad and Seon Glasgow Jr, who were the club’s top junior youth batsman and all-rounder respectively, received bursary awards from Republic Bank for their efforts.
Other senior awardees are Waqar Hassan, bowler of the year, most improved player Derrick McCalmon and emerging player Martin Singh.
While Keyon Gangoo and national player Nigel Deodat were awarded senior and junior youth bowler of the year respectively. Zameer Inshan and Farouk Subhan were the most improved players for the youths.
The packed audience included Region Five Vice-Chairman, Rion Peters, Region five Chambers PRO Pradeep Bachan, CEO of Rose Hall Youths and Sports Club Hilbert Foster, Human Resources Manager Sherwyn Steward, national coach Julian Moore, club members, sponsors and other cricket officials. President of the club, Shabeer Baksh talked about the numerous challenges faced by the club on its road to success.
He informed that the intention of the club is to invest more in youth development for them to be better cricketers and individuals of the community.
Baksh advised the youngsters to stay in school, to educate themselves, to be smart cricketers and be intelligent in all their other endeavours.
He went on to tell the budding cricketers to focus on their talent and game and not attach themselves to any negatives. “The club has risen to ratings of being unmatched by any other club in the West Berbice area and has been amongst some of the better clubs in Guyana,” Baksh said.
Guest speaker, Region five Vice Chairman Rion Peters, praised the BCC on its remarkable achievements since the club was resuscitated, calling it a model organisation, which every other club and national sport organisation should emulate.
Hilbert Foster encouraged those involved in operations at the club to continue their work in developing cricket and advised the youths of the positives and negatives of society.
The club also presented international commentator Inderjeet Persaud with an honorable membership for his outstanding contribution toward the growth of the club. Retired cricketers Rudolph Moses Doodnauth and Hoolsaram Anil Lalsa were awarded for their service and performance in the development of the game in Region Five.The three umpires from West Berbice ‒ Ali, Moses and Johnson who are members of the Berbice Umpire Association were also recognised.
