…Daady!!
Guyanese politics has finally produced a customer complaint that deserves to be forwarded to the family business!! Sanction Man and his Sissies are complaining vociferously about conditions at Lusignan Prison, but unfortunately for the dramatic presentations, their Daady’s company was among the contractors awarded the GY$1.2 BILLION reconstruction contracts for said prison – which were only completed last year!! So, imagine Daaddy’s company helped build the accommodation, and Sonny-boy now finds the accommodation objectionable!! Somebody better check the defects liability clause!!
When the bids for the new facilities were opened in 2021, the public heard not only about international requirements but also blueprints insisting on construction that complied with the international Nelson Mandela Rules, focusing heavily on “humane living conditions, with lighting and legal/healthcare access!!” Prisoners were gonna transition from the old colonial-styled jails to humane dormitory-style living featuring dedicated beds and mattresses!! These were designed to eliminate overcrowding and improve overall sanitary conditions – especially with fellas dropping bars of soap on the floor and suchlike!!
High ceilings and specialised wall vents would allow hot air to rise up by mechanical fans and escape – while pulling cooler air in from the lower vents!! We heard from Sanction Man requesting that the angle of his fan be readjusted, didn’t we?? Now if Sanction Man is kvetching about the heat and the light, etc., shouldn’t he be having a word with Daady as to whether he cut some corners in executing the contract?!
AHHH. It all sounded so splendid from outside the gate – almost like going on a vacation at Punta Cana in the Dominican Rrepublic!! Clearly, the brochure reads differently when you’re handed a cell instead of a contract.
Mohamed screams prolonged isolation, continuous lighting and restricted visits – but the Prison Service rejects allegations of mistreatment and says his arrangements reflect security requirements!! For sure those competing accounts require scrutiny – but the family’s oft-repeated outrage brings up an awkward supplementary question – could the loquacious Sissie bring the construction blueprints to the press conference?
Of course, construction and prison management are different responsibilities, and a contractor doesn’t determine visiting hours, nor can a family connection establish who built a particular cell – unless, of course, you’re Pablo Escobar, who built his own prison so as to escape extradition to America!! Yep!! Every prisoner deserves humane treatment, but the irony could bend the bars, couldn’t it?? The family now has an unusually personal interest in whether the taxpayers received the standards they were promised!! A CoI??
Perhaps this experience will produce a vigorous WIN campaign for better conditions for all prisoners. That would be a welcome development. Until then, we await the next family statement: “We demand answers!”
Quite so – start with the project file!!

…the rules
Your Eyewitness was recently reminded of a Tennessee Williams quote – “The only thing worse than a liar is a liar who is also a hypocrite!” He was minding his own business scrolling on his phone while waiting for his turn at the dentist when suddenly Sanction Man’s Sissie #1 – also WIN’s Director of Political Affairs, manager of WIN’s opposition office, leader of protests, issuer of livestreams of said protests, etc… etc!! – apparitioned in his hand!!
Standing in front of the Lusignan Prison, she announced tremulously that she’d received “reports” of her brother being struck with another illness and an ambulance was summoned!! She demanded – in suddenly strident tones – to the guard duty that she be let in – and flashed a piece of paper she claimed was issued by the “Court” that she could visit at any time!!
Told that visiting hours ended at 15:30h on Fridays, she claimed that she’s been deliberately denied visitation rights!!
She’s started her feed, saying she arrived at 15:30h!!

…the DPP
So now that five Policemen were charged with murder within six days of being accused of beating a prisoner to death over in Vreed en Hoop, what can your Eyewitness now expect??

No more shakedowns for chicken fried rice??
