Home News Boat captain charged for illegal possession
A Pomeroon, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) boat captain was on Tuesday granted bail in the sum of $250,000 after he was charged for illegal possession of ammunition and appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.
Rollin Fernandes of Jacklow, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two, was charged for having the ammunition on October 4, 2018. He appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam.
It was previously reported that Fernandes and his bowman were arrested during a Joint Services exercise conducted in the Pomeroon River.
According to reports, ranks from the Guyana Police Force, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Guyana Defence Force’s Coast Guard, who are stationed at the Floating Base in the Pomeroon River, conducted a stop-and-search exercise on the cargo vessel Fernandes was piloting.
During the routine check, the ranks unearthed an unlicensed 12-gauge shotgun and 67 matching cartridges concealed in the bow of the boat.
Fernandes and his 32-year-old bowman were intercepted and were said to be assisting Police with their investigations. However, only the ammunition charge was brought against Fernandes.
Bail was objected to by the Police Prosecutor. However, Magistrate Sam granted Fernandes his pre-trial liberty. As a condition of bail, the 28-year-old man is required to report to the Charity Police Station every Friday until the completion of his trial. The case will continue on November 11, 2018.
