Boat Captain dies, another feared dead in separate boat mishaps

One boat Captain is now dead while another is feared dead following separate boat collisions on Thursday along the Cuyuni River, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), and the Barima River, Region One (Barima-Waini), respectively.
In the first incident, 57-year-old Steve Daniels of Kartabo Village, Lower Mazaruni River, died while a passenger was critically injured following a boat mishap in the vicinity of Tapir Landing, Cuyuni River.
Police stated that a 26-foot wooden boat, powered by a 200 HP Yamaha outboard engine, was proceeding in the vicinity of Tapir Landing with four occupants when it collided with an 18-foot aluminium boat, powered by a 40 HP Yamaha outboard engine and operated by the now-deceased.
As a result of the collision, the Captain of the 18-foot aluminium boat and three occupants of the wooden boat received injuries to their bodies. The Captain reportedly died at the scene.
The injured passengers were taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where one of them was admitted in serious condition. Police have since arrested the Captain of the wooden boat, and he is assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, a boat Captain only identified as “King” is feared dead after the boat he was operating collided with another in the vicinity of Kokerite Village, North West District (NWD), Barima River, Region One.
According to information received, a small ballahoo was proceeding along the Barama River from Bamboo Landing, North West District, to Charity with four passengers when it collided with a small aluminium boat.
Police stated that as a result of the collision, the two occupants of the aluminium boat fell into the river. A 23-year-old male from Kariako Village was rescued, but the aluminium boat’s Captain disappeared underwater and has since not been found.
The rescued occupant was taken to the Moruca District Hospital, where he was treated and remains under observation. The Captain of the ballahoo was arrested and is assisting Police with the investigation.
