Boat captain nabbed with 6lbs cocaine at Bartica

A boat captain who plies the Parika-Bartica route was on Friday taken into custody after a quantity of cocaine was found in the haversack he was carrying.

Based on reports received, a team of Police ranks were performing duties at the Bartica Stelling when the captain arrived on a passenger boat from Parika. As such, he was detained and taken to Bartica Police Station where a search was conducted on a dark blue haversack that he was carrying at the time.
During the search, four black plastic bags containing 22 smaller transparent plastic bags with several pieces of whitish rock-like substances were unearthed.
The cocaine was reportedly weighed in his presence and amounted to 2 kilograms, 609 grams. In light of the discovery, the suspect was arrested, cautioned and admitted that he had collected the illegal substance from a “Red Man” at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), and was expected to deliver same to someone in Bartica.
Based on that bit of information, the Police also arrested the person whose name was provided by the cocaine trafficker as the intended receiver. The person has since denied the allegation.
Both men remain in Police custody as investigations continue.
