Home News Body found in Berbice identified as missing fisherman
The unidentified body that was found at Palmyra, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), on Monday last has been identified as a fisherman who went missing after leaving his home on Sunday.
Police have confirmed that the man was identified as Chabilall Kumar, 52, of Welfare Street, New Area, Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice.
Kumar, who was described as an epileptic and an alcoholic, left his home on December 6 to go fishing and was found on December 7 in a trench at Number 5 Bramfield Public Road, Corentyne.
Police said after the man was found, they were immediately summoned to the scene, where an investigation was carried out, and no marks of violence were found on his body.
When the fisherman was found, he was clad in cream short pants, a multi-coloured brief and a green face mask covering his nose and mouth.
A blue vest and a shirt were also seen some distance away from the body.
Following the discovery, several persons were questioned in the area, but no one was able to identify him.
His body was later picked up and escorted to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was subsequently taken to the Arokium Funeral Home where he was identified by his family.
Investigations are still ongoing. (G9)
